(This is the third in a series called “Things To Do” – it will focus on the many, many things there are to do in and around Great Falls)
There may not be any happier place in Great Falls than the Trailside Dog Park!
The official name is the Pacific Steel & Recycling Trailside Dog Park, and it’s located at 800 River Drive North. It’s open from dawn until dusk every day – but closes for a few weeks each year in May/early June for turf maintenance.
It opened in July 2009, and it features two large fenced areas — one for larger dogs, and one for smaller dogs. The two areas are separated by a pavilion that has a picnic table and benches.
I take my little buddy Ziggy there quite a bit, and he absolutely loves it – as do all of the other dogs we meet! They go zooming all over the park, chasing each other and tennis balls, sniffing out friends, and panting like crazy.
There are rules – primarily cleaning up your dog’s poop! There are usually plastic bags available, but it’s always a good idea to bring one or two just in case they run out.
As much as I love the dog park, here are a few ideas that might make it even better:
– A vending machine that dispenses tennis balls or Frisbees – maybe $2 each – with all proceeds going toward park maintenance/upgrades
– Lights for occasional night-time activity/events – “Bark After Dark!”
– A covered area with a bit of shade for the pups
When I win the massive Powerball lottery, one of the first things on my list is to build a huge indoor, climate-controlled dog park 🙂
