Winter Warning

Winter Warning

Better late than never: Winter is set to make a grand appearance in Great Falls this weekend! Yes, Winter doesn’t officially start for a few more days, but usually by mid-December we’ve had at least a few good snowstorms and some single-digit (or colder) temps. We “suffered” through some unseasonably mild temps in October and November, with nary a sub-zero to report, and only a handful of temps in the teens. And snowfall has been lacking. But brace yourselves: with a high temperature of -8, this weekend promises to remind us what Winter is all about!

Sunday Linkage

First up: a new-to-me Great Falls blogger! It’s the Montana Scarecrow, blogging at Montana Thoughts. He’s also got a nifty photoblog, too. I’m happy to report that the KRTV “Polar Plunge” team exceeded its goal and raised over $1,700 for Special Olympics Montana. You can see some video of the Plunge (and Stroll) right here. And yes, temperatures were actually ABOVE freezing for this year’s stroll – but that wind blowing down Central Avenue brought the wind-chill way down! Brave souls, those plungers. And for those who wondered why I didn’t take the plunge: yes, I love the cold...

Where’s The Snow?

Where’s The Snow?

What a beautiful day! November 25, clear blue skies, about 50 degrees. But…where’s the snow? This is the week that we usually get a nice fluffy layer of the white stuff: back in 2005, we had a pretty decent snow storm on the 27th; in 2006, we had a blanket of snow on the 25th; and last year, it was a winter wonderland on the 27th. Unfortunately, the forecast for the rest of the week doesn’t offer much hope for snow: So come on, people: let’s put more effort into wishing for snow! Work with me here!

“First Snow” Contest

WHEEEEE! Didja feel that cold (well, cool at least) front come through Great Falls at about 10:45 pm on Tuesday night? Wind started gusting, temps dropped by about 10 or 15 degrees – yay! Which reminds me: any bets on when we will get our first snow of the season? In fact, let’s make it a contest: on what day will Great Falls receive at least one inch of snow, as measured and reported by the National Weather Service? If you can think of a better way to determine a winner, let me know. Me, I’m gonna stake my...

June Snow!

OK, why is everyone looking at me like that? You think that I had something to do with this? Lil’ ole me? Preposterous! I mean, it’s not like I just happen to know the home phone number of Old Man Winter, and it’s not as if the following exchange actually occurred: Read The Whole Thing >>> SCENE: Monday evening. Old Man Winter is at home, watching “The Mole” and tinkering with the weather patterns over the midwest. The phone rings. Old Man Winter: Hello? David: Hi! Uh, is this Old Man Winter? Old Man Winter: Speaking. David: Cool! Uh…no...

Rain vs Snow

Monday, May 12, 2008

You all know how much I love snow (hey – that rhymed!). Rain – not so much. Rain is cold, dark, gray, and wet. Snow is beautiful, pure, and crisp. How about you – which form of precipitation would you rather see falling from the sky? Read The Whole Thing >>> Take the poll Free Poll by Blog Flux « Hide It

Brrrr!

Brrrr!

The weather experts were absolutely right about the snow – most of them agreed that we would get between 8 and 16 inches, and we wound up with about 15 inches – but I don’t think any of them predicted that we’d drop below zero! Wow – more than a foot of snow, sub-zero temps, freezing fog…anyone else have the urge to break out the Christmas tree and begin singing holiday tunes?
