To Market, To Market

Sunday, June 18, 2006

OK, I am officially an idiot. I’ve lived here in Great Falls for nearly four years, and all this time I thought that the Farmer’s Market was strictly an event for fresh fruits and vegetables. On Thursday, however, I was informed that there is much more to it than that: arts-n-crafts, food, pony rides, and such. So yesterday I headed down there, and now I’m kicking myself for not having gone sooner — it was GREAT! The artisans are incredible: tye-dye shirts, trinkets & jewelry galore, wood crafts & furniture, baked goods, coffee, and so much more! There was...

Gitcher Grocery On!

Thursday, March 23, 2006

Shortly after arriving in Great Falls I fell head-over-heels for a certain grocery store, and I remain loyal to this day. I estimate that about 95% of my grocery budget is spent at this particular store. I won’t say which one – yet – because I’m curious about where YOU shop for groceries. I think that I’ve got all of the major stores covered in this poll…so tell us where you shop, and if you’re so inclined, leave a comment giving a reason or two. Birds-Eye View

I just made my first-ever purchase on eBay! It’s an aerial view of Great Falls from 1891: This map is a large scale reproduction of an original bird’s-eye view of Great Falls, Montana originally published by American Publishing Company. Measures 49″ x 35″ There’s a slightly smaller version still available for purchase, too, if you like this one.

Grocery Woes

Sunday, January 15, 2006

I’m sure most of you have heard by now that the County Market grocery store on the west side of town will be closed down permanently on Monday. I shopped there about three or four times in three years; prices seemed OK, but the selection and overall appearance of the store left something to be desired. So that leaves the County Market on east 10th Avenue South to compete against three Albertson’s, one Smith’s, and one Vans IGA. (Are there any other grocery stores that I’ve missed?) I’d wager that the Albertson’s on Smelter will pick up most of...

Mall Happenings

Sunday, November 20, 2005

Things are really happening over at Holiday Village Mall: the Ross Dress For Less isn’t here just yet, but it will be soon, and now Scheel’s has announced that it will renovate and move into the large empty block that used to house Herbergers. And to accommodate Scheel’s, it looks like Pepper’s Bar & Grill will be relocated, too. The only downside to this whole thing: waiting for it. It will be at least a year – possibly a bit more – before it’s all done. And speaking of the mall, did you know that you can purchase stamps,...

Storefront U.

Thursday, September 15, 2005

I don’t recall this event from years past, but it’s almost time for the 7th annual “Storefront University.” It will be held on October 6 beginning at 6:00 pm. What is Storefront University? “…downtown businesses hold great workshops for the community to learn about! Some of last year’s topics included Secrets To Great Soups & Chili, Panini Pizazz, Introduction To Green Tea, and Nordic Walking. Come see what we’ll have this year! After the workshops, people have the opportunity to ask questions and shop around. In addition, participating businesses have door prizes and special discounts … for more details...
