If you see any military folks around town this week, remember that they might be headed Over There, and keep them in your thoughts. Members of the 819th RED HORSE unit and their “sister” Air National Guard Unit, the 219th, will be deploying to what is known as “The Sandbox” next week. Their scheduled return will likely fall sometime between Mother’s Day and Independence Day…quite a while to be gone. Give ‘em a pat on the back if you see them. Relief

I’m sure many of you have heard that Malmstrom Air Force Base has sent several dozen airmen to aid in the relief efforts underway in and around New Orleans. One of those airmen is none other than John, of Domestic Life. Go on over and leave a comment of support — both for him and for his wife, who is pulling “double duty” while he is gone and she prepares the household for their cross-country move later this month.

Same, But Different

The big news finally broke today: the Base Realignment & Closure (BRAC) panel voted unanimously to keep the flying mission at the 120th Air National Guard in Great Falls. Not only is the flying mission going to remain here, but it will change, too, as the F-16 fighter jets are replaced by F-15 jets. I’m glad that the “roar of freedom” will continue to be heard in the skies over Great Falls!

BRAC: The List

Here is the official BRAC list that was released today. Malmstrom Air Force Base is NOT on the list, which is good news for Great Falls, although the 120th Fighter Wing of the Montana Air National Guard appears to be taking a direct hit with the proposed retirement of most of the assigned F-16 fighter jets and the re-alignment of others to ANG units in other states. Former Great Falls resident and soon-to-be-world-famous geologist Kim has a few more details, and current Great Falls resident gguy offers a few thoughts.
