Police Academy

Saturday, February 23, 2008

No, not the awful movies from the 80s…this is a program sponsored by the Great Falls Police Department to give citizens a “behind the scenes” look at the how and why of law enforcement in our community. The next Academy begins March 12, 2008. Classes will be held on Wednesday evenings. Participation requires a commitment of one evening a week and two Saturday afternoons for a 9 week period. Participants will meet on Wednesday evenings for three hours, 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM. Saturday afternoon sessions will be from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. In addition, at the participant’s...

Cascade County History Museum

Cascade County History Museum

WOW. I’ve driven by it, wondered about it, thought about checking it out…and on Friday I finally did visit the Cascade County History Museum – and it was great. There are scores of items on display detailing the history of Cascade County – including Great Falls, Stockett, Tracy, Ulm, the Smelter, Tribal Americans, historic buildings, sports, medicine, education, and much more. So many pictures, too – absolutely fascinating to see life in Cascade County stretching back over 100 years. (click anywhere on the pix to see them all full-size!) There’s also a section devoted to “traveling” exhibits that changes...

Benefit Success

We had no idea what to expect as we drove to the Northwest Center last night to attend the fundraiser for the family of Luke Clinger; as we approached, though, it became clear that the event would be a success no matter how you define it. There were scores of cars, and when we opened the door to walk in…it was literally “standing room only.” There were hundreds of people there — it was an awesome sight. Long tables packed with folks eating, a line snaking around half the hall for other folks to get some food, the other...

Civics != Guns

Thursday, February 7, 2008

Yes, I know that the odds are extremely remote of anything like this happening here in Great Falls, but then I’m sure that people in Columbine, at Virginia Tech, and other shooting rampages all thought the same thing. This time, it happened in Kirkwood, a suburb of St Louis, Missouri: A gunman with a history of acrimony against city leaders stormed a council meeting Thursday night, killing two police officers and three other people before law enforcers fatally shot him, authorities said. The man’s gunfire injured the mayor, a newspaper reported. The victims at the meeting in suburban St....

Campaign Cash

UPDATE, Tuesday night: Good news! Well, for me and other Romney fans. Looks like Mitt has won Cascade County, and is on the way to winning Montana. As we head into “Super Tuesday,” let’s take a look at how some of our neighbors here in Great Falls are voting – with their cash. The Huffington Post (yes, I hate to link to it, but…) lets you see individual households, the amount donated, and the candidate, all broken down by ZIP code. Click here and then type in the ZIP code, and then you can click on the red or...

Recall Effort

Friday, January 11, 2008

Some of Great Falls’ more vocal residents asked the Mayor, the City Manager, two City Commissioners, and the manager of the Animal Shelter to resign – or else face the possibility of a recall. Me, I don’t think a recall will gather enough signatures. In fact, I think the entire process will be a tremendous waste of effort for all parties involved. You can vote over at Cataract City as to whether you think a recall will be successful or not (or you can choose “don’t care!”). In fact, I’m so sure that the recall will not succeed that...

City Manager Finalists

Thursday, January 10, 2008

The five finalists for the City Manager position have been announced, and without knowing anything about them other than their names and current locations, I’m already cheering for James Patrick, who is the current City Manager in Kalispell. The candidates are James H. Patrick, the city manager of Kalispell; Michael L. Ashcraft, deputy city manager in Olathe, Kans.; Gregory Thomas Doyon, city manager of Franklin, N.H.; Michael L. Stampfler, a consultant and former city manager of Casselberry, Fla., and Portage, Mich.; and Mark A. Winson, vice president of Lake Superior College in Duluth, Minn., and former city of Duluth...
