At Gibson Pond

At Gibson Pond

Went to feed the geese and ducks at Gibson Pond last night and got a couple of cool pictures. | Some of the ducks were gettin’ jiggy with each other, and I learned (via Google) that their manner of reproduction is often referred to as a “cloacal kiss.” Also saw some pelicans come in for a landing, and quite a few bats as the last flickers of sunlight faded. Didn’t know there were bats here!

Montana State Fair

Friday, July 27, 2007

It’s time! The 2007 Montana State Fair is upon us – definitely will be heading down there. I enjoy sampling the delectable foodstuffs and seeing the many vendors hawking their wares…but you all know that my favorite part of the Fair is the animals! So how many of you will be heading over to the Fair, and what do you think your favorite part will be?

Little Dog Lost

Received the following pix and message from a co-worker today: | click images for larger view The attached pictures are of a young dog that we found on 53rd Street, about a 1/4 mile from Malmstrom AFB, and he was moving towards 10th Avenue South. He is a very sweet little guy, we named him Rough and Tumble, because he looked like it! He is wearing a blue bandana and he was pretty hungry and tired. He looked like he has a family that loved him very much (he was very cuddly and obedient). He appears to be about...

City Commission Meeting Tomorrow

Monday, July 2, 2007

Tomorrow (Tuesday) the City Commission will meet at 7:00 pm. On the agenda is the hot-button topic of the animal shelter and the Humane Society of Cascade County, which GeeGuy has been discussing (here, here, here). Also on the agenda – unofficially and certainly not on paper – is the 3-minute rule, which rule sparked the eviction of Susan Overfield at the last meeting. By the way, I’ve moderated my opinion of the incident – I think that both Mayor Dona AND Susan Overfield should apologize: to each other, to the City Commission, and to the other folks who...

Give A Hoot

Stopped by Giant Springs this afternoon for a BBQ with some friends, and over in the far corner of the park, watching us with their amazing eyes… | (click the pix for larger view) WOW – I have never seen an owl before – only on TV – and these two were absolutely incredible. I’ve read that Montana is the only state that is home to all types of owls native to North America, and I’ve been looking forward to finally seeing some – and today was my lucky day!

Newfoundland Dogs On Display

The Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center in Great Falls, Montana, held a “Newfoundland Appreciation Day” to honor Seaman, the Newfie that was companion to Lewis & Clark as they made their historic journey. My friend Kelley brought her adorable 9-month old pup, Grizzly, and along with some other proud Newfie companions, shared some tips and stories with the audience. I learned a lot about them – that they are water lovers, have webbed feet, perform amazing rescues, and are often confused with actual bears. OK, that last bit I made up. The dogs were great – putting up with...

Time For Canada Geese

Time For Canada Geese

After work on Friday I stopped along the Missouri and hung out with the Canada geese for a little while…a few minutes of Goose Zen, if you will. The babies are growing up so fast (sniff)…they seem to be in a “lanky teen” stage. And, of course, as I watched, the babies made a dash towards River Drive, and the parents dutifully blocked traffic…and after spending about two minutes on the other side, they all turned around and marched right back across the street. Silly gooses! And don’t forget: the scientific name for Canada geese is “branta canadensis!”
