Happy Birthday to Me!
Well, not ME, exactly, but rather to GreaterFalls.com! Actually, the official day was on Wednesday; the very first blog entry here was on May 7, 2005, which makes GreaterFalls three years old. In dog years, that’s about 21 years old, and in blog years, that’s probably…what, 40 or 50 years old? Here’s a screenshot of the early days, courtesy of the Wayback Machine (click to see full size) (update: image link now fixed!):
Thanks for helping me get to the three-year mark! Seriously - having awesome folks like you around makes this fun. I would have baked a birthday cake to share with all of you, but it’s so hard to squeeze baked goods through the internets, ya know.
UPDATE: awwww…thanks, everyone, for the nice comments! And especially to Dave (the *other* one!) for the b-day dedication!
Questions Need Answers
Several questions via the Contact form this week, and I’m turning to you smart readers for some answers.
On This Day
Two Years Ago: Happy Spring!
One Year Ago: Baby Geese (gee, didn’t expect that, did ya?)
ALSO: here are the answers to the Crossword Puzzle (click to see full size)! I hope you enjoyed it - work will begin shortly on #2!
I signed up for Twitter ages ago (in web-time), but never did much with it. It’s sometimes referred to as a “micro-blogging” application: once you sign up, you can type messages of up to 140 characters, and the messages show up on your Twitter page. Pretty simple, but sounds boring, right? Well, it turns out that it is a much more powerful and useful tool than originally thought. So FWIW, here is GreaterFalls on Twitter!
Update on RNH
An update on Redneck Hippie, whose real name, I believe, is Larry Kralj. My recent entry about his mean-spirited rants on the Tribune forums resulted in a comment here at GreaterFalls from someone who claimed to remember Larry when he was a teacher in Chester, and related a tale about Larry’s behavior during that time. I don’t know if the incident really happened, and if so, if it happened the way the commenter remembers it. My opinion is that there might well be some truth to it, but that’s based only on what I know about present-day Larry and his temperament.
New Bloggers!
Wouldja believe that there are some new Great Falls bloggers added to the roster? First up is Roots & Leaves, created by Beatrix, who is a massage therapist and herbalist. Next up is The Crow’s Nest, from Capt Black Eagle, a familiar name to anyone who has visited the Tribune Forums. He’s starting off with some thoughts about Montana and the economy. Go welcome our newest bloggers!
Linkage
Great Falls blogger Ataricat has an entry in a contest to create an ad for Barack Obama; while I do not support Obama, I will say that Ataricat’s ad is pretty cool. Go take a look and cast your vote!
How many of you believe that Great Falls is haunted? According to Strange USA, there are at least three spots in (or near) town that rate.
This isn’t about Great Falls, but it IS about a Canada Goose. It’s a sweet tale of a semi-adopted goose, told from the goose’s perspective.
Looking for some reviews of Dick’s RV Park? Look no further.
Did you know that George Montgomery, star of Western TV and movies and well-known for his artistry, is buried here in Great Falls?
ALSO: a comment from Bovell earlier that you might have missed: “I misplaced a little black bag with a gold chain and a gold bracelet with the name BOVELL on it at Siebel soccer park on Friday April 18th. please contact me by email (calikickzb@hotmail.com) if you have any information. Thank You.”
From The Archives
Instead of the regular mid-week Retro entry, how about a look at some of the early Archives here at GreaterFalls? These entries are from May and June of 2005, when the site was only a few weeks old:
How many of you have heard of Boulder Ridge? It’s a fancy resort just a few miles south of town, but anecdotal research tells me that most folks in Great Falls don’t even know it exists.
Remember the Bison Parade? Modeled after the successful Cow Parade, this one placed decorated bison sculptures around Great Falls. Still some around town. Very whimsical!
How does Great Falls compare to the other large communities in
Great FallsMontana (thx Displaced!)? Some people think that we are often thought of as the “ugly stepsister” of Montana. My very first - but definitely not the last - entry about the legendary Sip-n-Dip! A true classic.
Hope you enjoyed the trip in the Wayback Machine!
Inaugural Crossword Puzzle
I’m not sure why, but I thought it would be fun to create a crossword puzzle. Nearly all of the answers are Great Falls-related, although a few exceed GF city limits. Only one answer has nothing to do with Montana; what can I say, I was stumped to fit anything else. So here it is: if you click on it, it will display in larger size suitable for printing. And yes, it does help if you are familiar with the Great Falls blogging community for a few of the answers. I hope you like it!
And here are the clues:

Oh - and please let me know if there are any errors!
Following Up
A recap of a few items still hanging out there: first, if anyone has a generator that they can loan out for use in a local rock concert, please let me know. Second, if you have an opinion about a proposed local radio talk-show, drop a comment here and let ‘em know. And third, did anyone ever find out the cause of the power outage last week?
