I’d think that it would be hard to always have to lift the lid to get a clip. New idea: make a fully animatronic deer that would sense your hand near it, hook a single clip in its antler and toss it up thru the tiny hole in the top. Bonus feature: if the owner got over-efficient and put too many clips in the jar ( and covering our poor deer), it would snort derisively and stomp its feet, refusing to give you a clip.
