The Tribune has a brief article about Brian Walsh, the Great Falls man who has been charged with the first-degree murder of T.J. Waldock last weekend. The piece references Walsh’s MySpace page, highlighting a picture of Walsh aiming two guns at a camera; the Trib tries to play up the similarity to the photos of the Virginia Tech mass-murderer. What I found odd is that the Trib didn’t post the picture in question; in fact, not even a link to the MySpace page. Here’s what I found at Walsh’s page (which may be pulled or blocked at any time, I suspect): the web address, complete with crude user name, is located at http://www.myspace.com/motherfuckersingf
And here is the picture in question:

And if there were any people who weren’t offended by Walsh’s user name, don’t worry: here is the first picture on his Photos page:

I am not posting this to add OR detract from what happened last weekend…just figured that if the Trib is going to talk about a particular website that provides a glimpe of what kind of person an alleged killer is, then maybe people ought to actually see the website and pictures for themselves.

Yep, I have a MySpace page; gotta keep up with the kids, ya know. I’m learning some of the “rules of engagement” and how MySpacers interact with each other, and the use of off-site “comments” and graphics is interesting…but I got tired of the annoying pop-up ads on every MySpace comment site, and the endless glitter and sparkly stuff, so I thought I’d try my hand at designing some MySpace comments that are (a) not flashy or sparkly, and (b) a bit more relevant to Great Falls. I’ll add some new ones periodically; if have any requests for a graphic, just let me know and I’ll try to whip one up. Here’s a sample:

Received the following message from Kathy at the Humane Society about the upcoming “Chip Clinic” for dogs and cats; if you love your pet(s), this sounds like a very good idea, especially for such a low price. If you have any questions, call 454-2276.
HUMANE SOCIETY OFFERS MICROCHIP CLINIC
The Humane Society of Cascade County will offer a microchip clinic for pets this Saturday, June 2, 2007, from 1-4pm at the Westgate Mall. Drs. Micki Lague and Rick Helms will inject the mostly-painless id chips under an animal’s skin for $25 which includes a lifetime registration. Proceeds benefit the Humane Society operations. There is a limit of 500 pets for the first clinic.
Microchips are approximately the size of a grain of rice and are injected in the scruff of the neck. The owners information will be registered with the microchip company, and should your pet become lost, virtually any vet or shelter with a scanner can retrieve your information. It is a much more reliable way to find your lost pet than relying on collars and tags, which are easily lost.
Another chip clinic will be sponsored at Bark at the Park on June 30 by the Electric City Kennel Club, with proceeds also going to the HSCC.
I’ll vouch for the “Bark In The Park” — I stopped by last year, and it was great fun. Also: Humane Society of Cascade County site, and a list of upcoming events.

I hope that some of you had the opportunity to read the first issue of the “Electric City Weblog - Offline” this month. If you didn’t, there are still a few copies left - you should be able to still pick up a copy at Good Time Charlie’s, Hairmasters (in Target plaza), Bert-n-Ernie’s, or Morning Light Coffee. If you can’t find one, let me know and I’ll get one to you.
Now comes the tricky part…
It’s time for the second issue! That’s right - the first one was enough of a success to justify a sophomore edition, according to our fearless editor/publisher, so we’re gearing up to do it again - and this issue will be twice the size of the first!
This is where you come in: if you have an idea for a story that you would like to see in the next edition, let me know. Yes, we have plenty of stuff to write about, but if there’s something that you’re just itching to see published and discussed, let’s hear it. Second, if you would like to advertise your business - or post a classified ad or announcement (graduation, love, etc) - let me know - believe me, the rates are well worth your time.
So if you have an idea for a story, or want information about posting an ad, leave me a comment here or e-mail me at david AT greaterfalls.com (or e-mail Greg at fallsblog AT yahoo.com).

I received the following e-mail a few days ago from someone who is considering moving to Great Falls:
Hi David,
I hope you don’t mind if I ask you a few dorky questions. I stumbled across your blog and was looking at the pictures you’d taken around the area. Since you are very enthusiastic about the Great Falls area and seem to very much enjoy it there, I’d like to pick your brain for a second if that’s all right.
We’re looking at moving to either Great Falls or Blacksburg, Virginia (yep, that’s a big difference!) and I’m driving from Arizona up to the Great Falls area probably tomorrow to take a look around and see what I think of it. My husband and I just got back from Blacksburg and liked it very much, but I’m going to sorely miss the West and am looking for an excuse to stay in this part of the country. We can’t afford Arizona (and I absolutely hate where I’m living right now) but if we can find an affordable, livable place in Montana I’d be happy as a clam. (My husband) hates cold, snowy winters and I hate hot, humid summers, so one of us is going to get the shaft wherever we end up.
Wow - comparing Virginia to Montana - that’s unthinkable to me!
The e-mail continued:
Questions… What’s the job scene like in Great Falls? I’m kind of a Jill of all trades, having done accounting, payroll and worked for attorneys. I also have a knack for writing. (My husband) is a machinist (uncertified) and has been for 10 years. Do you think we’ll have trouble finding work there?
As for weather, how cold and snowy are the winters, and how hot are the summers? Where we are right now in the mountains of Arizona we get heavy, heavy snow in the winter and it does occasionally dip below zero. I’m anticipating that Great Falls is probably less snowy but colder than here. Tornadoes or severe weather—are those issues there? How about smog in Great Falls? I know some of the cities that are located in valleys have trouble with pollution, but not sure about Great Falls. What is the crime rate like? I’m so, so very tired of being surrounded by meth heads who steal everything that isn’t nailed down. That will be a problem to some extent anywhere we go, but some places are definitely worse than others for that sort of thing.
Is property affordable around Great Falls? We’re looking to rent for a few months while we get settled and buy property on which to set a modular (if you know of any pet-friendly rentals, please do share) and would like a place a little bit out of town where we can have horses and room to breathe. What advantages/disadvantages does Great Falls have over some of the other cities in Montana like Billings or Helena? Any other thoughts or advice regarding the area?
Sorry for the barrage of questions… as you can tell, we’re pretty darn clueless.
Thanks,
~K~
Wow - lots of things to consider in there! I replied to her and gave her some brief answers (as best I could), and of course included the standard, “…when you get to Great Falls, give me a call and lunch is on me!” I always tell out-of-towners that, if I learn that they will be visiting.
In this case, I wasn’t sure if I would hear from “K”, but sure enough she called me yesterday evening from her hotel in town, and we headed over to Jaker’s for dinner. I had hoped to give her a windshield tour of the town, but it was dark by the time we finished eating, so I told her what to look for as she cruised around for the next two days, though, and also told her to call Ronda (the realtor who worked a miracle for me in 2002) to begin research on places to live.
I don’t know if “K” and her husband will wind up in Montana, but I sure did my best to convince her!

One of the best photo-bloggers (and author!) around, Great Falls’ very own Tom Kotynski, offers some great tips on hiking in the various areas in our region. Timely article for me, because - this is a shameful admission - despite having lived here for nearly five years, I have not yet been hiking…a situation that I hope to change very soon.

The tattoo business that I mentioned last week now has a website: Grafx Tattoos and Piercings. It’s a bit graphics-heavy (to be expected for a tattoo parlor) so you can really get a good look at the work that Nick and his team do. The site features: a portfolio for each artist; pictures of what the store looks like; and a page about the care and feeding of your new body art. There is also stuff about body piercings, but that is completely out of the question for me. The site, by the way, was built entirely by Nick, aka The BBG; he gave me a sneak peek of the work in progress a few months ago. Good job, Nick!

The latest edition of the “Small Town, Long Streets” podcast - hosted by Craig from MTPolitics.net - is now is now complete. You can listen to the podcast by clicking here (wma), or by clicking here (mp3) — you can either listen to it stream, or download for listening later on your player of choice.
Craig hosted an hour-long discussion with me and Rob (aka Wulfgar!), and we were joined by callers GiftShoppeGuy (one of Great Falls’ own!), Moorcat, and Shane Mason. The topics ranged from the history of the Montana blogosphere, the influence of milblogs, the community aspects of blogging (esp as it relates to Montana), the role of MySpace and LiveJournal in the blogosphere, the unique nature of Montana blogging, and even some references to prehistoric times (BBS, Fidonet, etc). It was a good hour of interesting conversation, although I’m probably biased
There was also general agreement that the Great Falls blog community is pretty healthy - GiftShoppeGuy had some good insights - and attributed it in part to the influence of Malmstrom Air Force Base and the steady influx of new people from around the country.
Craig, Rob, and callers - thank you much - it was fun!

UPDATE: as noted by Walter in the comments, the podcast/interview is on WEDNESDAY, May 23, at 9:00 pm (mt time). And the other guest is indeed Rob Kailey, who writes under the nom de blog of “Wulfgar!” (look at his blog URL). And yes, the exclamation point is required for Wulfgar!.
One of the most popular bloggers (in or out of Montana), Craig of MT Politics, has been experimenting with podcasting lately…he’s had a good run, interviewing interesting people, but now he’s scraping the bottom of the barrel: me. Yep - tonight (Tuesday) tomorrow (Wed) at 9:00 pm (Mountain Time), Craig will be talking with me. You can listen in by going here. But there is good news: there will be another guest - the shy, soft-spoken, retiring gentleman from Bozo known as Wulfgar. The three of us will talk about topics various and sundry, notably the Big Sky Blogosphere, and I’m pretty sure that it’s a call-in show, so if you want to experience the thrill of saying “Long time listener, first time caller!” then ring us up!
