As we bid farewell to 2006, let’s take a look back at just a few of the entries at GreaterFalls.com that generated some discussion in each month:
In January, the saga of Molly B, the Runaway Cow, grabbed headlines not just here, but around the nation. The closure of the east-side County Market made local news, too.
In February, Great Falls residents voiced their opinion about what makes our community so great, and the responses were wonderful.
March brought lots of discussion about whether or not Wal-Mart should build a second store in Great Falls; the next month Wal-Mart opted to pass on a second store.
In April, the Great Falls police conducted a “sting” of restaurants and convenience stores to identify stores that sold alcohol to minors, and there was a bit of controversy.
In May, we learned that Larry, a fixture of Great Falls streets and sidewalks, had what appeared to be his very own MySpace page.
In June, I (finally!) discovered the joy of the Great Falls Farmers Market - fun!
In July, things began to get a little busier at Westgate Mall as Action Cards & Comics moved in; since then, Westgate has also added a skating rink and laser-tag facility.
In August, I enjoyed breakfast at one of the newest eateries in town, the Rio Ranch Grill; others were not quite so impressed.
In September, there was a fire downtown that destroyed a local business - but no injuries, thankfully. And the 16th of the month brought our first official snow of the season!
In October, I floated the idea of changing the names of our two middle schools by incorporating the name of the now-defunct Paris Gibson Middle School into their names.
In November, of course, everybody was watching the Senate race (and others), and AJ showed off his skillz by making a campaign poster of sorts.
In December, the month got off to a chilly start with the Polar Plunge at the downtown Christmas Stroll, which generated plenty of good-natured rivalry between KFBB and KRTV.
In December, our City Commissioners and Mayor Dona got plenty of input on the topics of east-end development and the the Highwood coal plant.
And you can scroll through the entire year of entries right here. Thanks to everyone who has stopped by GreaterFalls.com this year, either as a reader, a commenter, a friend, or lurker!

Some of you probably already heard about this: Tuesday, January 2, 2007 has been declared a national day of mourning by President Bush, in honor of former President Gerald Ford. The impact: most federal offices and agencies will NOT be open on Tuesday, including most of Malmstrom Air Force Base, and there will be no mail service.

Thank goodness the light rain and drizzle turned to snow last night…and what a wonderful surprise to wake up to about eight inches of fluffy snow this morning! It was a breeze to shovel the driveway, although some of the drifts were mid-shin level. Did you enjoy Winter’s latest display?

I met Cliff a couple of years ago in his day job, and learned just a few weeks ago that he is an artist, too. He’s quite an accomplished artist, in fact, having won several contests and being featured on stamps. My favorite piece of art (so far) is, of course, these two Canada geese; you all know that I’m a sucker for those honkers. But these two pieces are pretty neat, too…

On Christmas Day, my friends Greg & Carla invited us over to their house to enjoy some good food and good cheer, and it was great fun (thank you - and Carla, the cookies were amazing!). One of the highlights of the day was seeing Yukon Sam (the Destroyer) decked out in his holiday garb:

I just love it when animals wear hats.

Voting for the the 2006 Montana Weblog Awards is almost over! If you haven’t voted yet, there’s still time - the polls close tomorrow. There’s a few Great Falls bloggers nominated, so show your civic pride and vote for ‘em! Wait, does saying that get me in trouble with the McCain-Feingold law or something? Head on over to Wulfgar’s place and cast your votes!

Would any of you good people be interested in a pizza party in January? Or how about a roller-skating party? Open to bloggers, commenters, and anyone else. Not exactly a blogger-bash, more like a “happy new year” party for good-natured Great Falls folks to get together. Would you attend? Do you have an idea for a get-together? Let me know!

I roused from a deep slumber, and realized that it was snowing! Normally I would have bounced out of bed and gazed in giddy wonder at the fluffy stuff, but I was just too wiped out (went to bed very, very late). But when I woke up much later in the morning, the sun was shining, the sky was blue, only a few stray clouds…but there was indeed evidence of the early flurries on the streets, in the grass. Not quite a “White Christmas,” but I’ll take it! So - how is your Christmas Eve day? Big plans? Hearty meals? Anything you want to “shout out” to Great Falls?
