Hello, Sam!

Quite a surprise when I was flipping through the FM dial during lunch: instead of hearing the usual thrash/alt metal/hard-rock on 107.3, I heard “You Aint’ Seen Nothin’ Yet” by BTO, followed by “Good Thing” from The Fine Young Cannibals. A few minutes later, the Rolling Stones with “Mixed Emotions”…and then Al Stewart’s “Year Of The Cat.” Whoa! Looks like there’s been a serious format change at 107.3!

The call letters are the same: KINX, but the station has a new name: “SAM.” That’s it – just “SAM.” I’m happy to see that the website is already updated, although there’s not much there yet. I’ve seen other stations adopt a named “personality” (most notably Radio Alice in San Francisco), and it’s pretty cool to have “Sam” here. I suppose the thrash/alt metal/hard-rock fans in Great Falls are disappointed, but since I never cared for the format, this is quite a welcome change.

MORE: check out some of these other songs that I heard today on SAM:

“Pop Music” by M
“Don’t Go Breakin’ My Heart” by Elton John & Kiki Dee
“Dance To The Music” by Sly & The Family Stone
“Walk Like An Egyptian” by The Bangles
“Turn Your Love Around” by George Benson

I love this format — any song, any time! Rock, lite country, R&B, pop, etc – eclectic, fun, and you never know what to expect.

UPDATE: the website has changed to SAM1073.com.

This is bullcrap. There’s enough wimpy rock stations in Great Falls for the aging hippies. Why take away the one good station? Not happy.

Here’s another fine example of why Podcasting will in the near future kill radio as we know it.

I am not happy about SAM. Great Falls already has K99 & The River. Don’t know why they feel they need another boring station like it. K99 has been the same, dull station for as long as I know. Thank god for my XM Radio!

[...] The good news came in July, when the “death-metal-rock” radio station became SAM. Now comes some bad news: 1400 AM is no longer an American Standards station that plays Sinatra, Mathis, Clooney, etc…it is now ESPN sports radio. Blech. Thankfully, we still have KEIN 1310 AM, the “Music Of Your Life” station. [...]
